Malin is the leading wire supplier of safety wire, lock wire, tag wire, steel tie wire, and straightened cut-to-length wire. Since 1884, Malin Company has produced high-quality safety wire for use in many applications. From aerospace machinery to hardware wholesale companies, Malin Co. is a number-one source of safety wire products. We pride ourselves on our reputation as a top provider of safety lock wire, wire ties, and aircraft stainless steel lockwire.
Safety wire or lock wire is an effective tool for ensuring the security and tightness of bolts and other fasteners. This positive locking device functions as a safety wiring mechanism to prevent fasteners from loosening or falling out. Safety wire typically threads through the fastener hole, twists to another part or fastener and twists again.
Malin understands the demands of the wire industry. Safety wire, for example, is used to ensure security of fasteners in all types of high-stress applications. This wire needs to withstand challenges such as high temperatures, extreme pressure, and longstanding stress. Inconel wire is another prominent wire type thanks to its high temperature resistance and ability to withstand extremities. For this reason, Malin supplies inconel wire that can take on the toughest environments in industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, and saltwater applications. We can also provide specialized wire like MS20995O32 lock wire, AMS 5687 lockwire, steel tie wire, and more.

Purpose of Lockwire and Safety Wire
Lock wire is an incredibly versatile safety tool. It is applicable in a wide variety of industries. Nuts, bolts, screws and other fasteners will loosen over time. Lock wire’s purpose is to prevent this loosening from occurring.
Lock wire’s secures two or more parts together and ensures the tightening of each fastener. It prevents loosening by counteracting it with additional tightening of the wire.
The typical method of lock wire installation installation consists of twisting two strands or wire together in a “Double Twist” formation. Single strand installation is more common in applications with closely-spaced, geometric patterns. The max number of fasteners depends on how many can be reached by 24 inches of wire.
It is also important to avoid installing lock wire in applications with possible chafing, fatigue or additional tension. The only tension the wire should experience is the tension for preventing loosening. To learn how to install safety wire, check out our blog post on the different application methods.

Aircraft Safety Wire FAQs
What is aircraft safety wire?
Aircraft safety wire, often referred to as safety wire or lock wire, is a type of wire commonly used in the aviation industry for safety-critical applications. It plays a vital role in ensuring the security and integrity of aircraft components and systems. Aircraft safety wire is typically made of stainless steel or another high-strength and corrosion-resistant material.
What material is used for aircraft locking wire?
Aircraft locking wire, also known as safety wire or lock wire, is typically made of high-strength and corrosion-resistant materials to ensure its reliability and effectiveness in aviation applications. Stainless steel is one of the most popular materials for aircraft locking wire. It is highly corrosion-resistant, durable, and has excellent strength properties. The two primary grades of stainless steel used are 302/304 and 316, with 316 being more corrosion-resistant, especially in marine or chloride-rich environments.
