Stainless Steel Lock Wire

Malin Co. is the leading supplier of lock wire, (also spelled as lockwire) safety wire, and other stainless steel wire products. We have been producing high-quality lockwire products since 1884. Furthermore, our safety lock wire products are ideal for aerospace applications as well as hardware and industrial wholesale companies.

Lock wire’s design ensures that fasteners are tight enough. Malin’s lockwire is a positive locking device, which functions as a safety mechanism to prevent the loosening of fasteners. Typically, lock wire is threaded through the fastener’s hole, twisted onto another part or fastener, and then twisted again.

The applications of lockwire – lock wire are endless. Typically lock wire is used in high vibration environments, and other forces, especially if there is a chance of the fasteners “shaking” loose.

What is Lock Wire?

Lock wire is an extremely versatile and useful tool for a wide variety of different industries. Nuts, bolts, and screws have the tendency to loosen themselves over long periods of time, and lockwire’s function is to prevent his from occurring. Thus, safety lock wire is a necessity for many industrial applications. The loosening of a bolt can result in dangerous mechanical failures in industrial and aerospace applications; therefore, lock wire is a critical tool in ensuring successful operation and the safety of employees.

Tips for Installing Stainless Steel Lock Wire

Nuts, bolts and screws must be tightened to their proper torque before application of lockwire. It is also important to align holes between fasteners whenever possible.

Upon completing the installation, the lock wire should be tight enough to prevent the nuts or bolts from moving.

The lockwire should always cause the nut or bolt to tighten rather than loosen. Install the wire so that it goes around the top of the head of the nut or bolt and pulls in the correct direction.

Avoid putting undue stress on the wire through over-winding or kinking, as this leads to weakness and breakage.

Leave 4 to 6 turns after the loop when cutting your lockwire.

Purpose Of Lockwire

Lock wire is an extremely versatile and useful tool for a wide variety of different industries. Nuts, bolts, and screws have the tendency to loosen themselves over long periods of time. The purpose of Lockwire is designed to ensure that fasteners remain tight and secure.

With a positive locking device that functions as a safety mechanism to prevent the loosening of fasteners. The lockwire is commonly threaded through the fasteners hole, twisted onto another part of the fastener and then twisted again.

Malin’s exclusive color-coded cans make it easy to identify their lockwire types. The blue canister is the famous stainless-steel lock wire. The yellow cans are Inconel lockwire. The orange canister is oxidized Inconel safety lockwire. And the red cans are Monel lock wire.

Each can is recyclable and molded from high-density polyethylene. Unlike the standard paper canisters, Malin’s canisters won’t degrade and will keep lock wire-free of grease and other corrosive materials. Lockwire from Malin Co is available in spools, coils, and bulk purchases.

Purpose of LockwireLock Wire

What is Lock Wire? Lock wire is a crucial safety tool for ensuring mechanical stability. Bolts, screws, nuts and other types of fasteners will eventually loosen over longer periods of time. This especially occurs in applications that produce high levels of vibrations. Applications like sports cars, aircraft turbine engines and even weaponry can benefit greatly from the implementation of safety wire.

Lock wire’s central purpose is the prevention of loosening for nuts, bolts, and other fasteners. This tool essential ties two or more parts to one another, so they remain as secure as possible. Safety wiring prevents the loosening of fasteners by counteracting it with more tightening.

The common application method for the installation of safety wire involves twisting two strands of wire together with a “Double Twist” configuration. The single-strange installation method is more applicable in situations with closely-spaced fasteners. The number of fasteners lock wire can secure depends on how many are within reach of 24 inches of wire.

Additionally, it is important to avoid using safety wire for applications that involve excess chafing, tension or fatigue outside of the wire’s intended tightening function.

Lock Wire Application Methods

Performing safety wire installation involves choosing one of two methods. The double-twist method is the most typical of the two, while the single-wire method is more useful for nuts, bolts and other fasteners in closely-grouped configurations. Single-wire applications also include parts for electrical systems or hard to reach places.

For the double-twist application method, the diameter of the wire depends on the type of fasteners. Parts with hole diameters exceeding .045 inch require wiring of .032 inch in diameter.

Those with hole diameters between .045 and .062 inch and spacing of fewer than 2 inches between each part require wire double-strand wire of .020 inch in diameter.

However, the single-wire method requires the use of the largest wire that can fit in the fasteners hole.

Additionally, aluminum wire of .031 inch diameter, copper wire of .020 inch diameter and similar types of wire function as seals on specific forms of equipment. This includes portable fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, emergency valves and equipment with similar construction.
