Stainless Steel Lock Wire – Lockwire

Malin Co. is the leading supplier of lock wire, safety wire, and other stainless steel wire products. We have been producing high-quality safety wire and lockwire products since 1884. Furthermore, our safety lock wire products are ideal for aerospace applications as well as hardware and industrial wholesale companies.

Lock wire’s design ensures that fasteners are tight enough. Malin’s lockwire is a positive locking device, which functions as a safety mechanism to prevent the loosening of fasteners. Typically, lock wire is threaded through the fastener’s hole, twisted onto another part or fastener, and then twisted again.

What is Lock Wire?

Lock wire is an extremely versatile and useful tool for a wide variety of different industries. Nuts, bolts, and screws have the tendency to loosen themselves over long periods of time, and lockwire’s function is to prevent his from occurring. Thus, safety lock wire is a necessity for many industrial applications. The loosening of a bolt can result in dangerous mechanical failures in industrial and aerospace applications; therefore, lock wire is a critical tool in ensuring successful operation and the safety of employees.

Tips for Installing Lockwire

Nuts, bolts and screws must be tightened to their proper torque before application of lockwire. It is also important to align holes between fasteners whenever possible.

Upon completing installation, the lockwire should be tight enough to prevent the nuts or bolts from moving.

The lockwire should always cause the nut or bolt to tighten rather than loosen. Install the wire so that it goes around the top of the head of the nut or bolt and pulls in the correct direction.

Avoid putting undue stress on the wire through over-winding or kinking, as this leads to weakness and breakage.

Leave 4 to 6 turns after the loop when cutting your lockwire.
